The Toronto indie-rock quartet has come a long way from their humble beginnings as synth-y electro-pop local darlings to a sleek, stadium-ready fan favourite the world over. It’s been a while since their last effort, 2005’s scrappy Live It Out, but a sneak preview of new material during their recent Canadian holiday tourdates indicates that their forthcoming album (due in the spring on Last Gang Records) will be worth the wait—the band’s new songs stretch the boundaries of their signature hooky sound, bringing the dance-rock aspect to the foreground, tempered by feisty frontwoman Emily Haines’ introspective lyrics.
The band took their time making the as-yet-untitled album, recording in a converted farmhouse north of Seattle and at guitarist Jimmy Shaw’s own studio at home in Toronto; Haines also embarked on a trip to Argentina to write in self-imposed seclusion; while bassist Josh Winstead and drummer Joules Scott-Key live in the U.S., adding to the delays.
But new tunes like the winsome “Give Me Sympathy” (with its charming “Who would you rather be/The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?” refrain) suggest that by the time Metric embark on a cross-Canada tour in support of the album in early ‘09, another of their new tracks, the aptly-named “Stadium Love,” may very well prove prophetic.
