What do you get when you combine a fierce female MC with an innovative producer/DJ? A full-on, booty-shaking, fist-pumping dance party, that’s what. Sounds almost, well, un-Canadian!
But the electro-rap duo of Toronto MC Isis and Montreal producer Grahm Zilla have been getting the party started all over the globe since first coming together in 2006 to defy genre boundaries. Though Grahm began the project largely to showcase his own productions, soon the two fused their respective sounds into a mash-up of synth-heavy electro-house, hip-hop and breaks that quickly caught on with other DJs and scenesters.
Even before releasing a full-length album, the pair has found themselves on a rollercoaster of worldwide touring on the strength of their sweaty, frenetic live show (that really has to be seen to be believed), an independent EP, and the release of a few key tracks via the Internet and in the clubs (you’ve probably eyeballed the cheeky video for the single “Jerk It” ). They’ve toured Europe twice in the past year, culminating in a recent headlining gig for Vice Germany, but haven’t forgotten the home crowds—they’ll play Edmonton and Calgary before the year is up, a free show at city hall in Toronto in January, and return to Guelph in February for the Hillside Inside event after slaying the audience at the main Hillside festival last July.
Given that the buzz around them seems to be at an all-time high, who knows just how big they could get once their self-titled album drops in late March on Ninja Tune’s sister label, Big Dada Recordings.
