Never underestimate the power of boy-girl harmonies. From the minute singer Amy Cole’s sweet backing vocals meet up with lead vocalist Nils Edenloff’s rhythmic delivery that mimics the skittering drumbeat anchoring this track, everything seems to fall into place. The dual vocals end up lending the tune a structure akin to a back-and-forth conversation, particularly given that it’s an elegy for a relationship gone bad (or that’s slowly, painfully about to). The Toronto trio clearly pay an uncommon attention to detail in their music – everything from the unusual arrangement to the small yet deliberate instrumental flourishes (the cello that seeps in when you’re least expecting it at first seems incongruous to the spiky percussion, but quickly becomes integral to establishing the song’s melancholy) are skilful and appealing. While their debut album is full of terrific tunes, “Don’t Haunt This Place” is perhaps the best introduction to a band that shows tons of promise.
(Rural Alberta Advantage play the Eye Weekly showcase at the Gladstone Hotel on March 12 at 1 am. You can also catch them at an all-ages show on March 14 at Trash Palace at 4 pm.)
